After more than three decades of dedication, loyalty, growth, and shared success, MasFuhSo (Pete & Amanda) announces the conclusion of its professional journey with Saldenah Carnival. This moment marks not an ending, but a transition – one rooted in deep gratitude, pride, and anticipation as we prepare for what’s next.
Peter Tang’s carnival legacy began long before he entered Toronto’s Caribana. In his native Guyana, he was a highly successful Mas Man, producing his first band in the 1980s for Banks DIH Ltd, following meetings with then Managing Director Clifford Reis and Chairman Peter D’Aguiar, facilitated by Vic Insanally of GuyEnterprise Advertising.
Prior to that, Peter served as the principal carnival fabricator for renowned Guyanese bandleaders John Fernandes and Bernard Ramsey, two of the most influential figures in Guyana’s carnival scene during the 1970s & 80s.
As a bandleader and designer, Peter Tang amassed an extraordinary record, over 30 first-place wins and a few second-place finishes. In recognition of his contributions to Mashramani, Guyana’s national carnival, the Government of Guyana awarded him the Medal of Service in 1991 during the country’s 25th anniversary of independence.
Peter’s final Guyanese production was in 1992, sponsored by Guysuco Corporation, titled “The Quincentennial: Images of 1492”, a tribute to Columbus’ 500th year anniversary arrival in the West Indies.
Later that year, following a bone shattering motorcycle accident, one that nearly resulted in the amputation of his left leg, Peter made the life-changing decision to emigrate to Canada.
In June 1994, Peter joined Saldenah Mas Band after meeting the visionary Band leader, Louis Saldenah, contributing immediately to that year’s Caribana celebration. By 1995, Peter became a bandleader under the old
Caribana Committee led by Lenox Farrell, producing a fully Guyanese supported Mas Band.
Recognizing the broader vision, Peter stepped away from bandleading and committed himself fully to supporting Saldenah Carnival, a relationship that would last until 2025.
Over the years, Peter wore many hats and was instrumental in numerous innovations that contributed to the success of Saldenah Carnival.
In the 1990s, masqueraders selected costumes from hand drawings pinned to a wall. As an accomplished photographer with experience shooting for newspapers, Peter led the transition to professional model photoshoots
and online presentations. From his Scarborough studio, he photographed Saldenah sections for many years and also documented the full band on the road during Caribana.
With a background in Computer Science, Peter designed and maintained the Saldenah website, creating hand-coded animated video intros long before smartphones and social media existed.
In 2005, Peter developed and coded the first online carnival registration and payment software, which debuted around 2006 now known as TicketGateway.
While handling photography, technology, and operations, Peter also built Big Mas for Saldenah. His most iconic creation, “De Chandelier,” portrayed by Dr. Pat Horsham at Caribana 2010, earned him the distinction of being the first designer, wire bender, and builder to receive the Ontario Science Centre’s Award for Innovation.
The costume was a 40 ft diameter, 30ft tall replica of a crystal chandelier, illuminated with real bulbs. A scaled-down version was displayed at the Ontario Science Centre following Caribana 2010. The following year the concept was replicated in Trinidad. Peter retired from building Big Mas shortly thereafter to concentrate on leading his masquerader section.
Together with his daughter Amanda, Peter created MasFuhSo, a brand that became one of Saldenah’s most successful sections for many years.
In 2019, MasFuhSo became the first section to exceed the 300-masquerader limit, putting over 499 masqueraders on the road, a remarkable feat, as all costumes were hand produced locally in Toronto rather than in China.
Following the COVID shutdown, MasFuhSo returned strong in 2022 with more than 350 masqueraders, though further growth was curtailed due to band policy.
In August 2025, Louis Saldenah retired as Band Leader, initiating a significant leadership change as Saldenah Carnival was passed to the next generation of the founding family.
Having joined the organization when that next generation were still infants, Peter, alongside many other dedicated section leaders and volunteer supporters, spent over 30 years helping shape Saldenah Carnival into a successful, enduring, and beloved Mas Band.
The current leadership now benefits from a strong foundation built over decades. Peter remains deeply proud of his role in helping create those outcomes and sincerely wishes the new leadership continued success as they carry the torch forward.
